Qiagen’s HGMD database selected for use in Genomics England project

Qiagen has announced that its HGMD human gene mutation database has been selected for use in a Genomics England project.

The 100,000 Genomes Project will utilise Qiagen's HGMD Online Professional solution to support scientists, clinicians and researchers across 13 NHS genomic medicine centres in their clinical reporting and interpretation work.

With 100,000 Genomes, Genomics England plans to gather and analyse the complete genomes of a large cohort of patients, with the aim of identifying the causes of disease and possible future treatments.

HGMD offers a sizeable knowledge base for interpretation of genomic data in hereditary and rare diseases, with data curated and drawn from the world's scientific and clinical literature.

It is expected that using this data will  provide the 100,000 Genomes Project with deeper insights into rare inherited diseases, aiding the diagnosis and tailored treatment of patients.

Dr Laura Furmanski, senior vice-president and head of Qiagen's bioinformatics business area, said: "Qiagen's industry-leading bioinformatics solutions, including cloud-based HGMD content, will help 100,000 Genomes derive actionable insights from a massive pool of next-generation sequencing data."
