Medtronic launches new Signia surgical stapling system
Medtronic has announced the launch of its new Signia stapling system, the latest addition to its minimally invasive surgery portfolio.
The single-handed powered stapling system offers real-time feedback to users during surgery and automated responses to this information, allowing them to use their other hand freely and remain focused on the surgical site.
Its Adaptive Firing technology measures firing force and adjusts speed based on tissue variability measurements, allowing for consistent staple lines regardless of the part of the body being treated.
The new system will initially be launched in the US, western Europe and Japan, before rolling out to additional territories worldwide during the company's 2018 fiscal year.
Chris Barry, Medtronic's senior vice-president and president of its surgical innovations business, said: "The Signia system is a first-of-its-kind stapling system and represents our commitment to pioneering intelligence-based minimally invasive surgical solutions."
Minimally invasive surgery offers a number of advantages compared to traditional open surgery and can be used in multiple surgical procedure areas, including thoracic, bariatric, colorectal and gynaecological.
