Ferring and ICF to create potential new treatment for anal fissures

Ferring has announced a new partnership with Brazil's Instituto de Ciencias Farmaceuticas (ICF) that will aim to create a new treatment option for patients with anal fissures.

This research collaboration will focus on the development of a mucoadhesive rectal delivery system to treat anal fissures and improve the overall quality of care for patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

Anal fissures are tears in the lining of the lower rectum that cause pain during bowel movements. They are a common complication of inflammatory bowel disease, with current treatments proving insufficient to offer long-lasting pain relief and promote healing.

The condition is associated with constipation, frequent bowel movements and diarrhoea, and trauma in the anal area. It is more likely to affect those with diets poor in fibre and high in fat and fried foods.

Alan Harris, senior vice-president for research and development at Ferring Pharmaceuticals, said: "This collaboration is focused on meeting a number of unmet needs – from alleviating the pain of anal fissures to promoting faster healing, increasing patient adherence and developing more convenient dosing."
