Biogen licenses anti-tau antibody from Bristol-Myers Squibb
Biogen has agreed an exclusive licensing deal for a phase II-ready experimental medicine with Bristol-Myers Squibb.
The compound, BMS-986168 is an antibody targeting extracellular tau, the protein that forms the deposits in the brain associated with Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative tauopathies such as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP).
Biogen plans to rapidly initiate phase II studies for BMS-986168 in both Alzheimer's and PSP, a rare and devastating condition that affects movement, speech, vision and cognitive function.
Under the terms of the deal, Biogen will receive worldwide rights to BMS-986168 and will be responsible for the full development and global commercialisation of the drug across both indications.
This deal underlines Biogen's commitment to rare neurodegenerative diseases, as well as its strengthened focus on Alzheimer's, with its expanded pipeline including a range of anti-tau and anti-amyloid candidates, as well as a BACE inhibitor programme.
Michael Ehlers, executive vice-president for research and development, said: "Based on encouraging safety and efficacy data, we believe BMS-986168 is a promising anti-tau candidate that may represent the next wave of medicines for Alzheimer's disease as well as the first real answer for progressive supranuclear palsy."
