Biogen study shows benefits of early treatment with Tecfidera and Tysabri

Biogen has announced the findings of a new analysis of real-world data that demonstrates the benefits of early interventions using its multiple sclerosis (MS) drugs Tecfidera and Tysabri.

Presented at the recent annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology in Boston, the analysis looked at US insurance claims data to compare the time to first relapse among MS patients initiating Tecfidera compared to alternative treatments.

Tecfidera was shown to significantly reduce the risk of relapse in newly diagnosed patients and those previously treated with a prior disease-modifying therapy, findings that were consistent with other comparative effectiveness data.

Meanwhile, data from the Tysabri Observational Program reinforced the proven efficacy of the drug and demonstrated that early and continued treatment generally leads to better clinical outcomes.

Dr Kate Dawson, vice-president for US medical at Biogen, said: "Timely treatment with appropriate therapies can help mitigate damage caused by MS and delay long-term disability for people with the disease."

Tecfidera is the world's most prescribed oral therapy for MS, while Tysabri is the only targeted high-efficacy MS treatment with more than ten years of clinical experience.
