Smith and Nephew’s Pico system shows infection reduction benefits

23rd May 2017

Smith and Nephew has announced the findings of a new clinical trial that demonstrates the benefits offered by its Pico single-use negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) system.

The independent, randomised trial showed that the use of Pico significantly reduced the rate of surgical site infections (SSIs) by 74 percent compared to standard care in patients undergoing major abdominal incisions.

Additionally, the patients' average length of stay also dropped by approximately eight days, from 14.7 days to 6.1 days on average.

This underlines the proven benefits that Pico can offer to patients at risk of poor healing, as it has been shown to help to improve the speed, strength and quality of incisional wound closure, while minimising failures of healing that may lead to infection or dehiscence.

Andy Weymann, chief medical officer of Smith and Nephew, said: "This study is the latest addition of research that reinforces the importance of Pico single-use NPWT and the significant impact it has on reducing SSIs, healthcare costs and ultimately improving the patient's quality of life."
