Zoetis receives grant to build infrastructure in African nations

Zoetis has received a grant of $14.4 million (11.09 million pounds) to aid the development of a more sustainable approach to livestock production in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has provided the grant, which will be spent by Zoetis over the next three years to develop veterinary diagnostic networks and animal health infrastructure in Ethiopia, Nigeria and Uganda.

This will include the creation of veterinary laboratory networks and outreach services to increase the availability of medicines and services, as well as the implementation of sustainable disease diagnostics and the strengthening of local veterinary expertise.

Dubbed the African Livestock Productivity and Health Advancement (ALPHA) initiative, the project will see Zoetis collaborate with governmental authorities, local veterinary associations, national and international NGOs, farmer associations and the private sector.

Juan Ramon Alaix, chief executive officer of Zoetis, said: "We believe the combination of Zoetis' leadership in animal health and experience in forging broad collaborations in emerging markets will allow us to accelerate the advancement of animal health in the region."
