Pfizer’s Trumenba approved for meningococcal group B disease in Europe

Pfizer has announced that its vaccine Trumenba has been approved for the prevention of invasive meningococcal disease by the European Commission.

The vaccine has been ratified for use in preventing disease cases caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B in individuals aged ten years and older. Adolescents and young adults are considered a critical demographic for vaccination, due to inherent environmental and social risk factors such as close-quartered living and sharing behaviours.

This approval was based on the results of a clinical development programme in which more than 20,000 adolescents and adults were evaluated, showing that Trumenba induced protective serum bactericidal antibody responses to diverse MenB test strains.

Pfizer said it will continue to invest significantly in manufacturing processes and facilities to ensure a sufficient supply of Trumenba in Europe, where the majority of meningococcal disease cases among adolescents and young adults are caused by serogroup B.

Susan Silbermann, president and general manager of Pfizer Vaccines, said: " With the European Commission approval of Trumenba, Pfizer now has a comprehensive portfolio of vaccines to help prevent five of the most common disease-causing meningococcal serogroups in this region."
