Unilever growth outpaces markets during first half of 2017

24th July 2017

Unilever has announced its financial results for the first half of the 2017 business year, during which it delivered a total turnover of 27.7 billion euros (24.76 billion pounds).

This represents a 5.5 percent year-on-year improvement, with underlying sales up by three percent. It means the company was able to achieve profitable growth that outpaced its markets, with accelerating momentum in all categories and subcategories except spreads.

Its personal care division was an important contributor to this performance, thanks to the rollout of new Signal oral care products and Baby Dove offerings, as well as the strong performance of the Sunsilk haircare portfolio.

Other key highlights of the six-month period include the acquisitions of brands such as the Hourglass personal care business, while plans are progressing to sell off the underperforming spreads division.

Unilever's chief executive officer Paul Polman said: "We anticipate accelerating growth in the second half of the year, driven by the phasing of our innovation plans and a step-up in brand and marketing investment."
