GlaxoSmithKline opens new aluminium salts facility in Montrose

GlaxoSmithKline has announced the opening of a new aluminium salts facility at its established site in Montrose, Scotland.

Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon attended the official opening of the new facility, worth 44 million pounds, which represents the company's first sterile manufacturing facility in Scotland.

This new site will allow the company to produce a key ingredient for approximately 70 percent of its vaccines portfolio, offering protection against diseases such as pneumonia, tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough.

Les Thomson, director of the GlaxoSmithKline Montrose site, said: "Montrose was able to be considered for this investment by GlaxoSmithKline because we have the right mix of people and skills."

This follows the firm's recent announcement of a further 29 million pound investment to support the manufacture of medicines for respiratory illnesses at Montrose, meaning overall investment in new manufacturing in Montrose and its antibiotics operation at Irvine has reached nearly 342 million pounds since 2012.
