Pfizer to launch collaborative trial of breast cancer therapy

Pfizer has announced the launch of a new clinical study assessing the potential benefits of palbociclib in the treatment of advanced breast cancer.

The company is partnering with Alliance Foundation Trials and six international cancer research groups to launch PATINA, a phase III clinical study of the cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 (CDK 4/6) inhibitor palbociclib, also known as Ibrance.

PATINA trial will evaluate palbociclib in combination with anti-HER2 therapy and endocrine therapy as a first-line treatment for patients with hormone receptor-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive metastatic breast cancer.

Preclinical data and preliminary results from early-phase clinical trials have demonstrated the potential efficacy of palbociclib in this patient population, but the drug has not yet been approved for this indication in any region.

About 500 participants will be recruited worldwide for the study, with the first patient selected last month.
