Sugars in breast milk ‘can protect babies from infectious disease’
A new study has offered evidence that breast milk can offer babies protection against bacterial infections.
The Vanderbilt University research has revealed that some of the carbohydrates in human milk possess their own antibacterial properties, while also enhancing the effectiveness of the antibacterial proteins present.
Looking at human milk carbohydrates called oligosaccharides, it was found that they were able to kill bacteria directly, with some also serving to physically break down biofilms that bacteria form to protect themselves.
Moreover, by mixing these sugars with antimicrobial peptides from human saliva, the researchers demonstrated that this anti-biofilm activity enhanced the effectiveness of the other antimicrobial agents in the breast milk. It is hoped that future research could lead to the development of new antimicrobial drugs that mirror this capability.
Steven Townsend, assistant professor of chemistry at Vanderbilt University, said: "This is the first example of generalised, antimicrobial activity on the part of the carbohydrates in human milk. One of the remarkable properties of these compounds is that they are clearly non-toxic, unlike most antibiotics."
