Royal College of Nursing calls for investment in school nursing

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has urged the government to increase its investment in school nursing for the benefits of teachers and students.

This call came in response to new data published by NHS Digital, which revealed that more than 550 school nurses have been lost since 2010, which represents 19 percent of the total school-based NHS workforce in England.

Of particular note is that fact that this trend appears to be gathering momentum, with more than 100 posts having been lost in 2017 alone, which the RCN attributes to a lack of funding available to support fully-staffed school nursing services.

The organisation has raised concerns that the loss of school nurses is leaving teachers without essential training, while also making it more difficult for students with chronic health conditions to attend mainstream schools.

Fiona Smith, the RCN's professional lead for children and young people's nursing, said: "It is time the government wakes up and realises the hugely detrimental impact these cuts are having to our children and our society. School nursing is a critical service and it needs to be treated as such."
