BMA welcomes end of public sector pay cap in Scotland

The British Medical Association (BMA) has responded positively to news that the controversial public sector pay cap will be coming to an end in Scotland.

Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon has pledged to lift the current one percent cap on pay rises for NHS and other public sector staff, while also committing to record spending for the NHS, including the possibility of using income tax to support Scottish public services.

The BMA has been one of several healthcare sector bodies that has been calling for an end to the pay cap for some time, with Scotland's decision likely to increase pressure on the UK government in Westminster to do the same.

Peter Bennie, the BMA's Scottish council chair, said: "Investing in workforce and providing fair terms and conditions must be a priority for any government so that the NHS can attract and retain the staff needed to deliver safe, high-quality patient care."

Other measures announced by the Scottish government include the extension of free personal care to people aged under 65, new steps to enhance air quality, increased investment in active travel, and measures to restrict advertising of unhealthy food and drinks.
