New Stoptober figures show rising success rates of quit attempts

28th September 2017

Public Health England has announced the return of its Stoptober campaign, which will once again encourage smokers across the country to give up smoking throughout October.

To coincide with the return of the annual campaign, the organisation has highlighted data from a University College of London study showing quitting success rates are now at their highest for at least a decade.

During the first six months of the year, 19.8 percent of those attempting to quit were successful in doing so, which is significantly higher than the 15.7 percent average for the last ten years.

The Stoptober quit smoking challenge has inspired more than 1.5 million quit attempts since its launch in 2012, and is based on research showing that stopping smoking for 28 days increases the chances of quitting permanently by a factor of five.

This year's campaign marks the first time that Public Health England has actively promoted e-cigarettes as a quitting aid, based on the growing number of people who are making use of this approach.

Professor Gina Radford, England's deputy chief medical officer, said: "Far too many people are still dying as a result of smoking but there has never been a better time to quit. The culture has changed, strong legislation is in place and effective support is available."
