BD launches new diagnostic test for carbapenemase-producing organisms
BD has announced the launch of BD Phoenix CPO, a new test to detect and classify carbapenemase-producing organisms (CPO).
Available as part of the BD Phoenix automated microbiology system in Europe, the new solution is the first automated phenotypic test for the detection of CPO, and is designed to help hospitals identify and contain infections caused by CPO.
Included on BD Phoenix gram-negative panels, the test identifies CPOs and provides the Ambler classification of the enzyme produced. The test can detect CPOs accurately in under 36 hours, compared to conventional phenotypic methods, which can take up to 96 hours.
The test allows hospitals and laboratories to categorise microbial resistance and facilitate the rapid implementation of infection control procedures and the selection of appropriate antibiotics, potentially helping to combat an increase in antimicrobial resistance.
Steve Conly, vice-president of microbiology for BD, said: "The BD Phoenix CPO detect test gives laboratories an accurate and cost-effective method to rapidly identify CPOs and support patient management."
