Global task force announces new push to reduce cholera deaths

A major international effort to reduce the number of people dying from cholera is being spearheaded by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Entitled 'Ending Cholera: A Global Roadmap to 2030', the initiative sets out a strategy to reduce deaths from cholera by 90 percent by 2030, primarily by identifying endemic hotspots where predictable outbreaks of the disease occur regularly.

Resources can then be aligned to share best practice and strengthen partnerships between affected countries, donors and international agencies, allowing a coordinated approach to cholera control to be implemented, with country-level planning for early detection and response.

The project will be overseen by the Global Task Force on Cholera Control, a network of more than 50 UN and international agencies, academic institutions and non-governmental organisations.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Fondation Merieux and WaterAid are also supporting the work, which could potentially help up to 20 affected countries to eliminate cholera by 2030.

WHO director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: "The disease takes its greatest toll on the poor and the vulnerable – this is quite unacceptable. This roadmap is the best way we have to bring this to an end."
