Medtronic receives CE Mark approval for Intellis neurostimulator

6th November 2017

Medtronic has announced that its Intellis platform has been approved for both spinal cord stimulation and peripheral nerve stimulation in Europe.

Intellis has been developed to be the world's smallest fully implantable neurostimulator for spinal cord stimulation, and has received CE Mark approval for use in the management of certain forms of chronic pain.

The device is able to simplify and improve the patient experience with improved battery performance and user-friendly management using a Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 tablet interface, allowing patient activity to be tracked in real time.

Clinical studies have shown that this form of stimulation technology is able to provide effective long-term pain relief, improved quality of life and pain-related disability, while reducing the need for pain medications.

Dr Marshall Stanton, senior vice-president and president of Medtronic's pain therapies division, said: "Medtronic's goal is to simplify treatment and improve the patient experience with personalised therapy that provides long-term pain relief and helps restore function."

This approval means that the Intellis system is now commercially available in both the US and Europe.
