Abbott study shows clinical benefits of PressureWire diagnostic tool

9th November 2017

Abbott has announced new clinical trial data that offers new evidence of the health and cost-effectiveness benefits of its PressureWire diagnostic tool.

Data from the FAME 2 study have shown how patients with coronary artery disease who underwent a percutaneous coronary intervention guided by the PressureWire fractional flow reserve (FFR) tool experienced better health outcomes.

When used in combination with medical therapy, the FFR diagnostic device was able to deliver significantly fewer major adverse cardiac events after three years, at comparable costs to patients who received medical therapy alone.

The FFR technique works by measuring the pressure of blood as it flows through a blockage in the coronary artery, helping cardiologists to determine which vessels to treat and potentially avoiding unnecessary stenting.

Heart disease is a major driver of healthcare costs, meaning cost-effective treatments that improve clinical outcomes for patients are in high demand.

Chuck Brynelsen, senior vice-president of Abbott's vascular business, said: "This data demonstrates that FFR-guided stenting in combination with medical therapy can have greater long-term benefits for patients, as well as health systems, over medical therapy alone."
