New data shows continued exodus of nursing and midwifery staff

Recent trends showing an increasing number of nurses and midwives leaving the profession have continued, according to a report from the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

A previous report from the organisation in July showed there were more nurses and midwives leaving the register than joining it for the first time, with the latest data indicating that this state of affairs has not changed.

Over the last 12 months, the number of UK graduates leaving the profession has increased by nine percent, while the number of nurses and midwives from Europe leaving the register has also increased by 67 percent.

Additionally, the number joining the register from the EU has dropped dramatically from 10,178 last year to 1,107 this year, a fall of 89 percent. Meanwhile, the amount of staff joining from the UK was shown to have remained static when compared with the previous 12-month period.

Jackie Smith, chief executive and registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, said: "It's worrying that we are seeing a continuing rise in nurses and midwives leaving the register, and our data is clear that this is being driven by both UK and EU registrants."
