Roche agrees NHS availability deal for breast cancer drug Perjeta

Roche has agreed a new commercial deal with NHS England that will allow patients across the country to benefit from the breast cancer therapy Perjeta.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) will be able to consider final approval guidance allowing Perjeta to be made routinely available for NHS patients, following this confidential arrangement with NHS England.

Perjeta is designed to be taken with trastuzumab and docetaxel, and is licensed to treat HER2-positive breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, cannot be surgically removed and has stopped responding to other treatments.

The drug has been available via the Cancer Drugs Fund since 2013 and benefits around 1,300 patients per year. It will still be distributed through this channel until final guidance from NICE has been issued.

NHS England chief Simon Stevens said: "Today's announcement shows that for companies who are willing to work with us, there are real gains for them, for the NHS and most importantly for patients able to get new and innovative drugs."
