New report calls for additional NHS funding to prevent drop in care quality

13th November 2017

The government has been called upon by three leading health charities to allocate more funds to the NHS to prevent the standard of care from deteriorating.

Analysis from the Health Foundation, The King's Fund and the Nuffield Trust shows that current spending plans are falling well short of what the NHS needs, based on an assessment of Office of Budget Responsibility projections and historical funding trends.

The report estimates that a funding gap of at least 20 billion pounds will arise by 2022-23, while 2018-19 will see funding per person fall by 0.3 percent. As such, it recommends at least four billion pounds more for the NHS should be committed in the next budget to stop patient care from deteriorating next year.

It was also suggested that any increase in pay for NHS staff needs to be fully funded, rather than being met from within the existing NHS funding settlement, while a plan should be formulated to meet the government's election commitment to provide an extra ten billion pounds to carry out essential repairs and improve deteriorating facilities.

Jennifer Dixon, chief executive of the Health Foundation, said: "Without proper investment now, the NHS will slip well below the standards and outcomes of healthcare provided by our European neighbours. This is entirely avoidable."
