UK public ‘does not widely recognise link between obesity and cancer’

The majority of people in the UK do not understand the link between obesity and cancer, according to a new study.

Led by Cancer Research UK, the study surveyed 3,293 British adults, revealing that only one-quarter of respondents listed cancer as a health issue related to being overweight when asked an unprompted question.

Additionally, several misconceptions were observed about the types of cancer linked to obesity, with more people knowing that obesity causes cancer in the digestive system organs, such as the bowel and kidney, than for reproductive organs, such as the womb or breasts.

Moreover, those in a lower-income group were more likely to be overweight or obese and were less aware of the link between weight issues and cancer, an issue that could be exacerbated by rising obesity trends among poorer people.

The report also showed that it was more likely for overweight people to receive instruction on how to lose weight when visiting the doctor, rather than being given information about the range of health issues associated with being overweight or obese.

Study co-author Dr Jyotsna Vohra from Cancer Research UK said: "We're very concerned that most people simply don't connect cancer with obesity. This study shows that only one in four know that excess weight increases the risk of cancer, so we need to make the link very clear."
