New funding injection for NHS announced in Budget 2017

The government has pledged an additional 2.8 billion pounds of funding to support the NHS in the latest Budget.

Chancellor Philip Hammond has confirmed that an extra 350 million pounds will be spent on the NHS before the end of the year, followed by a further 1.6 billion pounds in 2018-19 and 850 million pounds in 2019-20.

The short-term funding injection will help the health service to cope with the pressures that are expected over the winter period, with healthcare sector leaders having warned that waiting times are likely to increase.

NHS organisations have reacted with disappointment to the funding plans announced in the Budget, with NHS England chairman Sir Malcolm Grant saying the extra money would go only "some way towards filling the accepted funding cap".

British Medical Association council chair Chaand Nagpaul added: "With workforce pressures and uncertainty from Brexit looming, today was an opportunity to put the NHS on a stable footing as we enter uncertain times. It was an opportunity missed."
