Janssen receives EU approval for plaque psoriasis therapy Tremfya

Janssen has announced that its new plaque psoriasis therapy Tremfya has been approved by European regulators.

The European Commission has approved Tremfya for the treatment of adults with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis who are candidates for systemic therapy, with this drug representing the first biologic that selectively blocks interleukin-23, a key driver of immune inflammatory responses in psoriasis.

This approval was based on data from three phase III clinical studies, with the VOYAGE 1 and 2 trials showing that the drug delivered high levels of skin clearance after just 16 weeks, while the NAVIGATE trial showed that it can benefit patients switching from Stelara.

Kris Sterkens, Janssen's chairman in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said: "We are proud to be introducing an innovative new option to help address the continued needs of people living with plaque psoriasis."

The company previously received US approval for the drug as a treatment for moderate to severe plaque psoriasis patients who are candidates for systemic therapy or phototherapy in July 2017.
