Celgene announces retirement of executive chairman

30th January 2018

Celgene has announced that its executive chairman Bob Hugin will be retiring from the company after 19 years.

Mr Hugin joined Celgene in 1999 as chief financial officer, serving as president and chief operating officer from 2006 to 2010, and chief executive officer (CEO) from 2010, until he became executive chairman in March 2016.

Under his leadership, Celgene was able to increase its net product sales and adjusted diluted earnings per share each year by double-digit percentages, while its portfolio of approved products doubled, and its workforce expanded from 2,500 employees to 7,500.

When Mr Hugin steps down from the Celgene board of directors on February 5th, current Celgene CEO Mark Alles will take on the additional role of chairman. He has been with Celgene since 2004, and succeeded Mr Hugin as CEO in 2016.

Mr Alles said: "Bob is an inspirational leader, a mentor and a friend to everyone associated with the organisation. On behalf of all Celgene employees, we wish Bob and his family the best in the next chapter of his life."
