Merck Sharp and Dohme names new head of UK discovery facility

Merck Sharp and Dohme has announced the appointment of Dr Fiona Marshall, formerly of Sosei Group, as the head of its new discovery research facility in London.

Dr Marshall will be tasked with driving early bioscience discovery and entrepreneurial innovation, leveraging her more than 25 years of experience leading drug discovery research.

At Sosei Group, she served as executive vice-president and chief scientific officer, having previously founded the biotechnology firm Heptares Therapeutics, which was acquired by Sosei in 2015.

She is a world-renowned expert in G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) biology, an active area of drug research, and led the first group to show that GPCRs could form heterodimers. Dr Marshall has published more than 80 peer-reviewed papers in this field.

Dr Roger Perlmutter, president of Merck Research Laboratories, said: "Fiona's exemplary scientific accomplishments and in-depth drug discovery experience will enable her to make important contributions to the scientific environment within Merck Research Laboratories."
