Merck MS therapy approved by Scottish Medicines Consortium

14th February 2018

Merck's new multiple sclerosis (MS) therapy has been given the green light by the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC).

Mavenclad (cladribine) has been devised as a treatment for relapsing forms of MS in patients whose condition is highly active.

The SMC approved the pill after a phase III study demonstrated that it showed superiority over placebo when it came to annualised relapse rates in patients with high disease activity relapsing-remitting MS.

However, the treatment has only been accepted for restricted use within NHS Scotland.

Mavenclad can only be administered to patients with rapidly evolving severe relapsing-remitting MS – those with at least two relapses in the last year whether on treatment or not, and at least one T1 gadolinium-enhancing lesion.

The pill will also be available to patients with sub-optimal therapy relapsing-remitting MS – individuals with one or more relapses in the previous year while on disease modifying therapy, and at least one T1 gadolinium-enhancing lesion or nine T2 lesions.
