Women ‘must be more aware of link between bloating and ovarian cancer’
Women in the UK may be failing to take the correct action when they experience persistent bloating due to being unaware that the condition could be a sign of ovarian cancer.
This is according to a new report from the charity group Target Ovarian Cancer, which questioned British women on what they would do when faced with the prospect of persistent bloating, finding that few of them realised this could be a cancer symptom.
Of those polled, 50 percent said they would simply make adjustments to their diet, compared to only 34 percent who would see a doctor with their concerns. Previous research by the charity has shown that only one in five women know persistent bloating is a symptom of ovarian cancer.
This is a particular concern given that women over 55, who are most likely to develop ovarian cancer, are also least likely to research their symptoms online, leaving them at risk of a delayed diagnosis and a worse outcome.
Annwen Jones, chief executive of Target Ovarian Cancer, said: "If women know ovarian cancer symptoms such as persistent bloating and are able to link them to ovarian cancer early on, lives will be saved."
