NHS report highlights ongoing staff and funding shortfalls

22nd February 2018

Data from NHS Improvement for the third quarter of 2017-18 has indicated that the health service continues to be affected by funding and staffing shortages.

The report has indicated that NHS deficits are set to be in the region of GBP 1 billion this year, with trusts asked to save four percent of their costs for the seventh year running – twice what the government has been advised is possible.

Moreover, the number of nurses and doctors is also falling short of the necessary levels, with eight percent of posts for doctors left vacant – rising to 12 percent for doctors in mental health services.

The Nuffield Trust has responded to the figures by calling on the government to rethink its funding and hiring policies, as a continuation of current trends could undermine the health service's ability to deliver high-end care.

Nuffield Trust chief executive Nigel Edwards said: "We can sign a cheque and bring back more money onstream if the will is there, but there is no button to push which will suddenly bring us tens of thousands of qualified extra staff."
