AbbVie study shows benefits of elagolix in treating uterine fibroids

AbbVie has announced new clinical trial data that demonstrates the effectiveness of the investigational drug elagolix in the treatment of uterine fibroids.

Results from the phase III ELARIS UF-I study, conducted by Neurocrine Biosciences, has shown that elagolix met its primary endpoint after six months, with this trial representing the first of two pivotal phase III studies.

Elagolix, in combination with low-dose hormone therapy, reduced heavy menstrual bleeding with 68.5 percent of women with uterine fibroids achieved clinical response compared to placebo, as measured by the alkaline haematin method.

Uterine fibroids are the most common type of abnormal growth in a woman's pelvis and can affect up to 80 percent of women by age 50. Potential symptoms include heavy menstrual bleeding, painful periods, non-menstrual vaginal bleeding and anaemia.
