Bayer to feature at event addressing parasitic threat to animals

Bayer will host a symposium at an event in Belgrade, Serbia, this year, where more than 150 thought leaders and scientists will gather to discuss a global parasitic threat to dogs and cats.

The meeting of the European Society of Dirofilariosis and Angiostrongylosis will take place at the Crowne Plaza Belgrade from July 5th to 7th.

Angiostrongylus vasorum, also known as French heartworm or lungworm, is posing a growing threat across Europe and other regions. Identified cases in European countries have increased by more than 1,300 per cent since 2002, while Uganda, Colombia, Russia and Australia have also reported infections.

Affected animals can become severely ill and, without prompt treatment, infections can prove fatal.

Dr Roland Schaper, global veterinary scientific affairs manager at Bayer, said the ESDA congress will support knowledge sharing on A. vasorum and Dirofilariosis, the disease transmitted by nematodes of the genus Dirofilaria.

He added: "It also plays an important role in educating veterinary professionals on the rapid growing epidemic of A. vasorum and guides pet owners on the risks of parasites and how to identify signs and effectively prevent [infection]."
