Sanofi’s new diabetes therapy accepted for EU regulatory review

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has responded positively to the application for review of the diabetes therapy supplement sotagliflozin, which has been developed by Sanofi in partnership with Lexicon Pharmaceuticals.

Sotagliflozin is an oral treatment that is designed to be used in addition to insulin in order to help improve the control of blood sugar levels in type 1 diabetes sufferers. 

It works by inhibiting both GLT-1 and SGLT-2, proteins that can negatively affect the processing of blood sugar by the kidneys and intestines.

Global head of development at Sanofi Jorge Insuasty said the new drug could represent a major step forward in the management of type 1 diabetes. 

He added: "There is a need for therapies to be used in addition to insulin to help people with type 1 diabetes better control their blood sugar. Sotagliflozin is the first SGLT-1/2 dual inhibitor to be accepted for regulatory review in Europe."

The EMA trials will involve around 3,000 patients to assess the safety and effectiveness of the drug.
