Tom Hayes MP Advocates for Urgent NHS Dental Reforms

13th May 2025

Bournemouth East’s Labour MP Tom Hayes is championing immediate reforms to NHS dental services amidst what he calls a “dental crisis.” Meeting with Eddie Crouch, chair of the British Dental Association (BDA), Hayes emphasised the necessity of revamping the NHS dental contract and enhancing patient access to care. These changes could significantly impact dental care provision, particularly in under-served areas like Dorset.

The discussion between Hayes and Crouch highlighted persistent staffing challenges fuelled by the current Units of Dental Activity (UDA) system. Despite Dorset recently increasing its UDA value to £35- meeting the BDA’s national target- significant issues persist. Hayes and the BDA seek to replace this outdated system to empower practises financially and ensure accessible dental care for all. Last month, Hayes also consulted with Dorset’s integrated care board’s acting chair, Rob Whiteman, and CEO, Patricia Miller OBE, about broadening dental access across the county. The government has earmarked 700,000 additional urgent appointments nationwide, with 13,569 allocated to Dorset, yet long-term solutions are still needed.

Tom Hayes’ proactive approach in advocating for NHS dental reforms reflects a crucial step toward addressing systemic shortcomings in dental care. His efforts to collaborate with stakeholders like the BDA and local health leaders could pave the way for meaningful change, ensuring that patients receive timely, necessary dental treatment and halting the progression of preventable oral health issues.
