Study Links Social Media to Teen Dental Confidence

12th August 2026

A New Zealand study of 502 adolescents has linked social media use to adolescent dental self-confidence and psychosocial well-being, and called for less idealised smile imagery in dental marketing. Published in Health Marketing Quarterly on 25 June 2026 and reported by Dental Tribune International on 31 July 2026, the research was conducted by Auckland University of Technology and the University of Otago to inform dental communications targeting younger audiences.

The study analysed survey responses from 502 adolescents aged 12 to 17. Lower dental self-confidence was associated with greater social and psychological impact related to dental appearance, particularly worries about peer judgement and self-consciousness. Aesthetic concern (private dissatisfaction with dental appearance against an internalised ideal) was not significantly associated, suggesting dental self-confidence has a distinct socially-oriented dimension. Among adolescents who spent more time actively using social media, the link between dental self-confidence and lower psychological impact was slightly weaker. Adolescents with a history of orthodontic treatment reported higher dental self-confidence but also greater social and psychological impact.

Lead author Dr Khaled Ibrahim of Auckland University of Technology positioned the findings as evidence that adolescent dental well-being extends beyond clinical outcomes to include whether young people feel able to smile, speak and interact without excessive concern about judgement. The authors recommend that dental practices reconsider highly idealised smile imagery in their marketing, with communications instead emphasising oral health, function and realistic outcomes. Co-author Prof Lisa McNeill of the University of Otago positioned the work against ongoing regulatory momentum in New Zealand, where a parliamentary inquiry completed in March 2026 recommended age restrictions for social media platforms for users under 16.

The commercial signal is a maturing dental marketing category facing tightening scrutiny on aesthetics-first messaging targeting younger audiences. Regulatory pressure (NZ social media restrictions, similar work in Australia and EU) will accelerate the shift towards ethical dental marketing standards. Expect Align Technology (Invisalign Teen), Dentsply Sirona (ClearCorrect Teen) and dental marketing agencies to recalibrate adolescent-focused communications.
