UK Bluetongue Cases Top 500 as New Clusters Emerge

Confirmed UK BTV-3 bluetongue cases have now topped 517 since the start of July, with senior government officials warning of emerging clusters in Lancashire, Cheshire, Staffordshire and Powys and a further 2,400 suspected incidents under investigation. Reported on 20 August 2026 from an AHDB-hosted webinar the previous evening, Defra estimates that around 80% of currently investigated incidents will be confirmed as BTV-3 based on present trends.

While the south-west of England remains the primary hotspot with 446 cases across Devon, Cornwall and Somerset, Gordon Hickham, Defra head of exotic disease control, told the webinar he expects growing case counts in northern and midland areas as the vector season progresses. Scotland has recorded six cases, all in Dumfries and Galloway. From 10 September 2026, livestock from bluetongue restriction zones will be required to be vaccinated before movement into Scotland. The Ruminant Health and Welfare website has published updated vaccination guidance for both livestock and camelids, and dismissed as a myth the suggestion that it may already be too late to vaccinate.

FarmVets South-West clinical director David Taylor called for a proactive vaccination approach for next year, describing more severe milk drop than reported in the Netherlands and increased fertility problems in affected cattle. He noted that just one or two days of milk drop would cover the cost of vaccination. Taylor also flagged that clinical signs such as facial reddening were being mistakenly attributed to sunburn or changing nutrition.

The commercial signal continues to reinforce structural demand for UK BTV-3 vaccination while highlighting significant productivity losses. Clinical signal complexity is emerging as a diagnostic challenge, potentially driving demand for improved diagnostic tools. Expect Boehringer Ingelheim (BULTAVO 3), MSD Animal Health (BLUEVAC-3), Ceva (Syvazul BTV 3) and IDEXX/Zoetis to sharpen their positioning through the rest of 2026 and 2027.
