AstraZeneca Taps Oracle for AI Clinical Trial Enrolment

26th October 2026

AstraZeneca has signed a non-binding agreement with Oracle to explore AI-enabled approaches to improving patient enrolment and clinical trial efficiency. Announced on 20 October 2026, the partnership will investigate selected use cases across oncology, rare diseases, cardiovascular, renal and metabolic, respiratory and immunology indications. The deal extends AstraZeneca’s rapidly expanding big-pharma AI partnership portfolio and reinforces Oracle’s commercial positioning across clinical trial technology.

The collaboration focuses on identifying eligible patients earlier in the trial process using AI applications and modern data platforms. AstraZeneca Chief Digital, Data and AI Officer Anne-Claire Gerbaldi positioned the partnership as supporting smarter clinical trials and strengthening safety monitoring. The deal builds on AstraZeneca’s existing AI infrastructure, including its open-source generative AI framework Reinvent (which halved the time to identify molecular structures) and its AI Development Agent ambition to halve CMC development time. Earlier 2026 deals saw AstraZeneca partner with Owkin and Evinova.

Oracle launched its Oracle Life Sciences AI Data Platform in January 2026, combining generative AI, agentic reasoning and customisable AI agents to accelerate drug development, clinical trials and safety monitoring. Oracle CEO Mike Sicilia positioned healthcare as one of the most important opportunities for AI, with Oracle expected to help accelerate research and connect more patients to clinical trials. The deal intensifies competitive pressure across the clinical trial technology category, where Oracle competes with Veeva Systems (Vault Clinical Suite), Medidata (Dassault Systèmes), IQVIA, Microsoft (Azure Health) and specialist AI drug development firms Recursion, BenevolentAI and Isomorphic Labs (Alphabet).

The commercial signal is a rapidly consolidating clinical trial AI technology category where big pharma is deploying substantial partnership capital with enterprise technology platforms. Patient enrolment efficiency has become a critical competitive differentiator. Expect Veeva Systems, Medidata (Dassault Systèmes), IQVIA, Microsoft (Azure Health), Google Cloud (Verily), Recursion, BenevolentAI and Isomorphic Labs (Alphabet) to sharpen their pharma AI positioning through 2027.
