Fresh out of University

1st August 2013

This is my first blog for Zenopa having recently joined the Healthcare Communications team, fresh from the university press. While I have been fortunate enough to begin a career in my industry of choice, I feel that other graduates with science related degrees may not be fully informed of the opportunities available to them.

After leaving college or sixth form, going to university is a direction many young adults decide to take (or perhaps decided to take, before the steep rise in tuition fees several institutions adopted in 2012). While a degree equips students with the key to open doors to numerous career paths, the very door they are looking for may remain hidden to them without the correct desire or guidance. I believe an occupation in Healthcare Communications may be the room of requirement that eludes science graduates until too late in their professional lives.

My peers at university reading courses such as Chemistry and Pharmacology were well aware of the jobs in clinical research, and even medical and pharmaceutical sales. This was mainly due to the presence of companies from these respective fields at careers events held on campus. A large portion were also attracted by the financial lure of the banking sector. However, none mentioned becoming a medical writer after completing their PhD, or working as an Account Manager to lead a diverse range of projects on disease awareness.

Addressing the irony of poor marketing for Marketing Services agencies may enhance the career satisfaction of science graduates, and in turn the quality of candidates entering the industry.
