Has the Animal Health Industry grown in 2016?

‘At the beginning of 2016, the global animal health market was valued at $24 billion, and according to Storm forecasts, there is expected to be an annual growth rate of 3% for the next four years. This is being generated by the growth of start-up companies, new vaccines and treatment for both farm and domestic pets. The industry has definitely gained interest, putting itself on the map by having faster growth!
For me, the growth within the sector was evident at this year’s London Vet Show. The change of venue for 2016 from the Olympia Grand to the Excel highlighted the growth and expansion of more companies into the market, particularly companies within human health showcasing their offerings. Anyone that works within Animal Health, attended the exhibition, from small organisations that are in pet nutrition showcasing their premium pet food offerings, right up to those who were looking for massive investments in capital equipment used to diagnose pet health issues. With improved availability of diagnostic high tech equipment and advanced nutrition information be more widely available, it is safe to say that there will be an increase in demand for commercial roles (eg, veterinary advisor or sales roles) as vets and nurses think about moving out of practices and consider alternative employment within the industry. Within my time recruiting for Animal Health, there has been a strong growth in qualified vets becoming Veterinary Advisors. These roles within the UK now number in the hundreds with vets choosing this as a second career choice after many years in practice. Salaries are growing, whilst the demand for core skills such as technical expertise, communication kills and commercial acumen remain the same.

Exhibitions like the London Vet Show are the perfect way for us recruiters to be able to see if there are new comers to the market that might be looking for our service offering, as well as catch up with some familiar faces, and see what the future of the market entails. What do I believe 2017 will offer – more growth in the industry, with further opportunities for nurses and vets to switch out of practice.
