Whether the discussion is around exposure to all clinical trials or surrounding whistle-blowing within the NHS, the buzz-words of the day are Transparency and Openness. I’m sure that you will agree that it’s important to exercise transparency and openness in communication in all areas of life, whether that’s through our interaction with work colleagues and clients or with friends, family and partners. The consequences of failing to communicate in this way are trust is lost (sometimes irrevocably) integrity is compromised and it’s only a matter of time before you end up with egg on your face.
Of course, we’d like to all think that we are always completely open and honest at all times but it’s surprising how often “grey-areas” arise in our everyday lives, particularly when it comes to recruiting people or looking for a new role. As a candidate you may wonder whether it’s acceptable to exercise poetic licence when writing your CV – is there any point in mentioning that 3-month blip in your career? The answer is categorically “yes” – the most successful people invariably make mistakes because they are willing to try something different and learn from the experience, what’s more there is no point in risking any omission coming to light, it’s a very small world when it comes to who knows who!
Something else that we always encourage is to be honest with your current employer as to why you may be unhappy in your current role because this can open up the opportunity to address your concerns without the need to move on.
Similarly as a hiring manager it’s imperative to be clear on the challenges that an opportunity brings, warts and all, after all people can only be disappointed if their expectations are miss-aligned. If a person is not inspired by the cons as well as the pros of a role, then they are not going to be successful in that position. I also urge hiring managers to be open-minded when someone has been completely transparent on their CV and not jump to conclusions if their background is not entirely squeaky-clean – in the challenging environment that we all work in it’s essential to be adaptable, resilient and courageous and these are all traits that develop from adversity.
