What Chemistry Candidates Want From the Interview Process (That Many Employers Overlook)

Kirstie Chatto
When I speak with chemistry candidates, one thing comes up again and again. The interview process often shapes their decision long before an offer is made. Even strong employers can lose good people, not because the job is wrong, but because the process feels unclear, slow, or disconnected from the work they would actually be doing.
Many of the candidates I support come from areas like chromatography instrumentation, mass spectrometry, organic chemistry, and laboratory equipment. They’re detail-led by nature, and they notice things quickly. When something doesn’t feel right in an interview, it leaves an impression.
Clear Structure Makes a Difference:
Candidates want to know what they are walking into. A simple outline of the stages, who they will meet, and how long the process usually takes helps them feel grounded. When that information is missing, people start to question how organised a team is behind the scenes. Even senior applicants tell me they feel more confident when the process is explained properly at the start.
Technical Conversations Matter:
Hiring managers often assume a role brief is enough, but candidates want to speak with someone who understands the tools or systems they’ll be working with. When applicants meet someone who knows the equipment or workflow, it reassures them that the business takes its technical work seriously. It also gives them space to show what they’re capable of, rather than feeling like they’re reciting a CV.
Timely Feedback Shapes Decisions:
One of the quickest ways companies lose talent is through lack of communication. When a process drags on with no updates, candidates’ lose interest. Even a short update helps keep momentum and shows respect for their time.
Why This Matters for Employers:
Chemistry talent is in short supply across many areas. People with hands-on experience in mass spectrometry, chromatography, and complex laboratory workflows never stay on the market for long. When an interview process feels steady and well-run, candidates stay engaged. When it doesn’t, they move on quickly.
At Zenopa, our team supports clients by keeping candidates informed, setting expectations early, and sharing the feedback they need to stay committed. Because we speak with chemistry professionals every day, we see patterns in real time, what they respond to, what pushes them away, and what makes them choose one opportunity over another.
If you’re looking to strengthen your hiring process or need support finding chemistry talent, we’d be happy to talk through what we’re seeing in the market and how it could help your next search.
