How to Prepare for an Online Interview
In the world of remote work and post Covid practices, preparing for an online interview is crucial to make a positive impression on your potential employer. Here are some steps we recommend to help you get ready:
Test Your Technology in advance, and I don’t mean 5 minutes before!
Technology is one of the most common (and irritating) problems when it comes to online interviews. While some hiring managers may be understanding, it does not giove you the best first impression, which is what you want to push at this stage in the process. To mitigate these issues, you can do the following:
– Ensure you have a stable internet connection.
– Test your computer’s camera and microphone to ensure they work properly.
– Use a reliable video conferencing platform like Zoom, Skype, or Microsoft Teams.
– Familiarize yourself with the interview platform’s features, such as screen sharing and chat.
– Have the interviewers phone number just in case.
Choose the Right Location
Find a quiet, well-lit, and clutter-free space for the interview, ensuring the background is clean and professional or use a virtual background if necessary. Minimize distractions and inform household members about the interview to avoid interruptions.
Dressing Professionally:
Dress as you would for an in-person interview. Choose professional attire that reflects the company culture. Some experts suggest avoiding loud or distracting patterns, and opting for solid colors instead.
Prepare Your Materials:
Have a copy of your resume, cover letter, and any other relevant documents on hand and prepare notes or bullet points for common interview questions and key talking points.
Practice Video Etiquette:
Maintain good eye contact by looking at the camera rather than the screen.
Smile and maintain a friendly, engaged demeanor throughout the interview.
Avoid interrupting the interviewer and wait for them to finish speaking before responding.
Use gestures and body language to convey enthusiasm and confidence.
Rehearse:
Practice your answers to common interview questions, focusing on your skills, achievements, and why you’re a good fit for the role. Conduct mock interviews with a friend or family member to get feedback on how you come across, and work on anything you stuggled to answer the first time around.
Research the Company:
Study the company’s website, mission, values, products, and recent news, and understand the role you’re interviewing for and how your skills align with it. Many candidates underestimate the importance of this, it shows your interviewer why you want not only to be in this role, but also to be a part of this particular business
Prepare Questions:
Have thoughtful questions prepared to ask the interviewer about the company, team, and role, avoid asking questions that can be easily answered through basic research such as which products they sell.
Follow-up:
Send a thank-you email within 24 hours of the interview expressing your appreciation for the opportunity and reiterating your interest in the position.
Remember that online interviews have their own unique dynamics, so practicing and preparing in advance can help you feel more confident and perform at your best. Good luck!
