NGS Scientist
Role Overview
You will work directly with the Chief Scientific Officer and collaborate closely with the production sequencing team, commercial team and the R&D bioinformatics group. You’ll play a central role in developing, optimising and delivering microbial sequencing workflows.

A leading microbial genomics lab in Birmingham is looking for a Senior NGS Scientist to take a key hands-on role across both production and R&D workflows. Role Requirements
Running Illumina and Oxford Nanopore workflows (WGS, metagenomics, RNA-seq, 16S)
Developing, validating and optimising NGS protocols
Providing troubleshooting and technical support to production teams
Working with automation systems (Hamilton STARLab, OT-2)
DNA extraction (manual + automated) and QC checks (TapeStation, Qubit, qPCR)
Translating R&D methods into production-ready processes
Maintaining SOPs and documentation
Working independently while collaborating across teams
Person Specifications
Essential Experience
5+ years NGS experience in a service-style sequencing environment
Hands-on Illumina and Oxford Nanopore experience
Strong library prep skills (Nextera, TruSeq)
Confident with DNA extraction techniques
Experience with automation platforms and troubleshooting
QC interpretation (TapeStation, Qubit, qPCR)
Ability to work independently with clear communication skills
Desirable
Microbial genomics experience
Automation scripting/protocol building
Exposure to ISO/UKAS/GLP/GCP
High-throughput lab experience
Understanding of downstream bioinformatics
