Abbott and UCSF discover virus with hepatitis C links

16th December 2015

Abbott has announced the discovery of a new type of human virus with links to hepatitis C through its research with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).

Known as human pegivirus 2 (HPgV-2), the strain is found among some patients with hepatitis C. Eight complete strains of HPgV-2 were identified, making this the first study to reveal the entire genetic makeup of the new virus.

To identify it, researchers used techniques for sequencing fragments of its genetic makeup, including deep sequencing and ultra-rapid pathogen identification technologies. The patient blood sample used to make the discovery was provided by the Center for Liver Diseases at University of Chicago Medical Center.

Although infection with this bloodborne pathogen was found to be closely associated with HCV, it is not yet known whether the virus on its own can cause disease.

Dr John Hackett, divisional vice-president of applied research and technology at Abbott, said: "Research such as this is ultimately focused on unlocking new technologies that hold the potential for significant improvements to the practice of healthcare."ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801808315-ADNFCR
