AbbVie and Argenx to create new immuno-oncology therapy
AbbVie is allying with Argenx on the development of a new immuno-oncology treatment that has shown promise.
The companies will collaborate to develop and commercialise ARGX-115, a preclinical-stage human antibody programme targeting the novel immuno-oncology protein target GARP, which is believed to contribute to the immunosuppressive effects of T-cells.
Argenx will conduct research and development through IND-enabling studies, with AbbVie holding an exclusive option to license and take control of the ARGX-115 programme upon successful completion of these studies.
In addition to this programme, AbbVie will fund further GARP-related research by Argenx for an initial period of two years.
Anil Singhal, vice-president for early oncology development at AbbVie, said: "We believe that the ARGX-115 programme is a unique opportunity to explore the potential to block certain immune-suppressive pathways that allow cancers to grow."
Argenx will receive an upfront payment of $40 million (27.9 million pounds) from AbbVie and near-term preclinical milestone fees of $20 million. It is also eligible to receive additional development, regulatory and commercial payments up to $625 million.
