Alcohol drinkers ‘often underestimate their intake’
The government has warned UK residents that they may be harming their own health by underestimating the amount of alcohol they drink.
As part of its efforts to improve public health through the Change4Life campaign, the Department of Health has launched a TV advertising campaign suggesting that some people may be drinking up to 40 percent more alcohol units than they are aware of.
This figure came from a study involving just under 20 people, each of whom kept a detailed drinks diary for two weeks.
In addition to raising awareness of this issue, the government is also aiming to encourage people to cut down on their drinking to reduce their calorie intake and save money.
Chief medical officer Professor Dame Sally Davies said: "Cutting back your drinking can reduce your health risks, reduce your calorie intake, help you sleep better and boost your energy."
Last month, the Change4Life campaign highlighted the potential dangers posed by the unknown salt, fat and sugar content of many common foods.
