Almirall conference highlights need for vascular care improvements

Almirall has underlined the need for an improved standard of care for sufferers of vascular disorders at a recent event held in Barcelona.

The company organised a meeting called Vascular Disease: A Multidisciplinary Approach last week, which was attended by more than 300 national and international healthcare specialists.

It was observed during the meeting that type 2 diabetes, a condition with numerous cardiovascular implications, is currently on the rise, while greater understanding of the risk/benefit profiles of anticoagulation and anti-hypertension therapies is emerging.

As patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes or heart or kidney failure account for 70 percent of healthcare expenditure, it is becoming more important for health professionals to make the most efficient use possible of their resources.

Dr Jose Ramon Gonzalez Juanatey, head of the cardiology service and coronary unit of the University Clinical Hospital in Santiago de Compostel, said: "We need commitment and coordination from every healthcare professional in order to provide excellent care that is cost effective and guarantees that 21st century medicines can be available to everyone."

Earlier this month, Almirall expanded its product range with the Spanish launch of Neurofarmagen, a pharmacogenetic test that can help identify the most appropriate medication for patients.
