American Dental Association Release New Research on Radiography Risks
Members of the American Dental Association have released study outcomes on recommendations to reduce risks associated with dental imaging, specifically discussing the balance between the value of radiographs and the dangers of radiation exposure.
They discovered that current digital radiography devices have eliminated the need for lead aprons and thyroid collars.
By using lead aprons and thyroid collars, image clarity can be affected, resulting in double the initial exposure, and therefore, new recommendations deem these methods unnecessary.
The departure from the utilisation of lead aprons and thyroid collars, the inclination towards digital imaging, and the meticulous use of cone-beam computed tomography systems demonstrate a developing understanding of radiation safety in dental practice.
The research, named “Optimizing radiation safety in dentistry: Clinical recommendations and regulatory considerations” was released in the Journal of the American Dental Association at the beginning of February.
