Bayer denies Trasylol link to kidney failure

Bayer’s Trasylol (aprotinin) has been linked to kidney failure in a new study.

The drug, which is used to reduce blood loss during operations, was found to increase the chances of kidney failure by 2.6 times in a New England Journal of Medicine study by Dr Dennis Mangano of the Ischemia Research and Education Foundation.

Bayer has responded to the study by saying its findings are not supported by it own research.

The company said in a statement: “The study conclusions published today by Mangano et al are not consistent with the more than 15 years of clinical trial data and experience Bayer has amassed on Trasylol.

“Bayer believes that Trasylol is a safe and effective treatment when used in accordance with the product labelling.”

The company also pointed out their trials involved over three times more patients, but said it would contact the study authors and had alerted regulatory authorities.
