Bayer extends commitment to sustainability

10th July 2007

Bayer has announced an extension to both the scope of its reporting on sustainability and to sustainability itself, as the firm continues its efforts to protect against climate change.

The company notes that its recent Sustainable Development Report 2006 sees the firm include both its indirect greenhouse gas emissions in addition to its direct contribution to climate change.

In the report for last year, the company identified a 2.6 per cent fall in direct and indirect emissions compared to 2005, while the paper also includes details of the company’s ongoing sustainability activities.

Dr Wolfgan Plischke, member of the Bayer management board responsible for innovation, technology and environment, said: “We have maintained an intensive commitment to climate protection in the context of our sustainable development strategy for some years.”

He added that a number of the company’s products aid the conservation of natural resources and avoid adding further emissions to the atmosphere, while the firm will continue to innovate in order to ensure the climate-friendliness of its product portfolios.

Earlier this month, Bayer announced the establishment of its Bayer Cares and Bayer Science & Education Foundations, with these new bodies having a combined capital of 17.4 million euros (11.7 million pounds).
